Patagonia's Capilene Cool Daily is one of the most popular sun shirts on the market, so it's a surprise to see it in the middle of our list. Don't get us wrong: this layer certainly gets the job done. Its fabric is light and flowy, includes a bit of stretch for greater freedom of movement, and has a more cooling effect than many other sun shirts we've tested. Plus, it holds its shape well when wet, dries quickly, and doesn't smell bad like many synthetic products (thanks to the HeiQ Pure treatment). Overall, the Capilene Cool Daily is a simple but effective sun shirt for everything from the trail to the water. But Patagonia's popular sun shirt falls short in some ways. For one, it lacks thumbholes, which can be a particularly nice feature for cyclists (eliminating the gap between gloves and sleeves). Second, thin fabric won't hold up to repeated contact with rock as well as nylon or a polyester/spandex blend (we're talking about you, climbers). And finally, the fit leaves a lot to be desired: Many have found the Capilene to be short in both the hem and arms, and the hood is annoyingly shallow (Patagonia also offers the hoodie in a "Relaxed Fit," which costs $10 more and features a more spacious design). But for comprehensive, affordable sun protection, the Patagonia does the job for most, and we love the company's transparency around its UPF rating, which sits between 17 and 45 (as they claim, even at 17, it blocks sun. 92% of the sun's rays).
