1. Proletariat
A hidden gem for beer lovers in East Village

Neighborhood: East Village Address and Phone: 102 St. Marks Place (212-777-6707) Website: proletariatny.com Are you sick of boring bars that offer a few IPAs and regular stouts on tap and call it a day? Then you'll want to rush to East Village's Proletariat, a small speakeasy that specializes in cult, unusual, small-batch beers. Plopping down on a swivel stool at the bar is a little like taking an AP class on beer nerdism. You'll find about a dozen obscure drafts from companies like Belgium's Brasserie de la Senne and Germany's Freigeist, which team up with an equally esoteric bottle list representing breweries like Quebec's Hopfenstark and Italy's Birra del Borgo. —J.B.

2. Little Rebel
Creative takes on classic dishes, popular late-night spot

The food is good, but the drinks are the real star of the show. The mixologists apparently make cocktails in every shade of the rainbow and each one seems prettier than the last (I haven't tried them all yet, but not for lack of trying).
3. Big Bar
Live music and events, Historic building with multiple levels

Big Bar is, despite the name, a small place ideal for a quick beer or a simple but well-executed cocktail. It's dimly lit and often crowded, especially at happy hour (Tuesday-Friday, 5-8 p.m.), when draft beers and margaritas are $5. Cash only.

4. Drop Off Service
Offers last-minute and rush services

Neighborhood: East Village Address and phone: 211 Avenue A (212-260-2914) After the last wash of this former laundromat, it was transformed into a bar dedicated to suds, err, craft beer. At the half-rectangle bar, rescued from the defunct and infamous gay bar The Cock, no-nonsense bartenders pour several dozen fresh beers (the tap lines are regularly cleaned) from well-known breweries like Green Flash, Greenport Harbor and Founders. They are served in a 20-ounce imperial pint and sell for just $6 or $7, a fair price that turns into a bargain ($3 and $5) during daily happy hour until 8 p.m. —J.B.
5. Down the Hatch
Over 100 craft beers on tap

And if you're looking for dive bar vibes but aren't necessarily looking to party, just show up earlier in the day. Down the Hatch is one of the best bars in Greenwich Village thanks to generous deals like half off the entire bar Monday through Friday from 12 to 7 p.m.
