1. Jacob's Pickles
Emphasis on scratch-made, locally sourced ingredients

Cuisine: Southern Location: 509 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024 Diners hanging out at Jacob's Pickles, New York. Jacob's Pickles has been on our list for a while after many sources told us it's one of the few Upper West Side restaurants with great food and downtown atmosphere. We finally had the chance to check it out on a Sunday night. The food is a creative menu of comfort cuisine, with items like devil's eggs, fried pickles, and the famous homemade cookies that are the size and density of a commercial cinder block. They also have good beers and a pretty solid brunch menu, assuming you plan on taking a nap afterwards.

2. Sarabeth's
Popular spot for upscale American breakfast and brunch in a quaint townhouse setting

Sarabeth's is a popular breakfast spot with multiple locations throughout New York City. It was founded by Sarabeth Levine, a self-taught baker who began selling her baked goods at an Upper Manhattan market in the 1980s. Her business grew quickly and she eventually opened her first restaurant on the Upper West Side in 1983. Today, Sarabeth's is a New York institution, loved by locals and tourists alike for its classic American breakfast dishes and baked goods. The restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere, friendly service and delicious breakfast dishes, including fluffy pancakes, French toast and a variety of egg dishes.

3. The Ribbon
Upscale American fare in a historic townhouse

Cuisine: American Location: 20 W 72nd St, New York, NY 10023 The soft lights inside The Ribbon create a relaxing and warm atmosphere for dining. We went to The Ribbon over Easter 2019 and loved it. The place has an old world feel while still being contemporary and welcoming. There's an old rock 'n roll jukebox, several televisions in the bar that don't interfere with the dining experience, and an impressive array of brown liquors. The food is classic American comfort with Southern and French influences, while the bar serves whiskey and offers modern cocktails and an approachable wine list. The service is up to par. Our waiter offered honest recommendations and even split all the dishes, so we didn't have to fight over a single dish. They also offer a wide variety of vegan options.

4. Magnolia Bakery
Known for its classic American baked goods and appearance in Sex and the City

Magnolia Bakery makes a good cupcake. Yes, there are about a million locations now and it's kind of a tourist trap, but Magnolia didn't become famous for serving dry, flavorless pastries. Their classic vanilla cupcakes taste like dipping a stick of butter into a bowl of sugar—in a good way—and the red velvet and chocolate flavors are textbook examples of this form. The original location is on Bleeker Street in the West Village, and yes, it's kind of charming in that "I love New York" way. Their beloved banana pudding is also worth it.

5. William Greenberg Desserts

Much attention has been paid to the traditional New York cookie known as the “black and white.” And while everyone may have their favorite place, I can say that I've tried more than most and the only ones I keep coming back to are William Greenberg's Cookies. I've made it something of a tradition: Every visit I make to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I stop by William Greenberg to take a black-and-white photo. A special thanks to the red velvet variety of him. 1100 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10028
