That being said, the first time I stopped by the Friendly I was alone. I just moved to a new city and stumbled upon this low-key patio hidden behind a questionable seafoam green stucco lunch counter with water stains and windows covered in punk band stickers. A woman opens the window, I place my order and sit in the back. When the smashburger known as OG Dirty Flattop arrives, she presents herself without any pretense. It looks like what you'd get from In-N-Out but like...somewhat less disguised. But the lies between the two toasted, flattened buns (presumably bought by the ton at Cosco) is a greasy masterpiece that can only be achieved after years of strategically neglecting to properly clean a griddle. I can say that this burger is bursting with flavor. So I take my first bite. Admittedly, this doesn't seem like a burger that should be included on your imagined "best of" list, but I think it's just beautiful. The burger is very simple and modifications are politely declined.
