But many out-of-town visitors (or locals) don't know that Sacramento has a maze of elevated streets and cavernous sidewalks built in the 1860s and '70s for flood control. Tours meet at the Sacramento History Museum and you and your guide explore buildings and artifacts excavated underground where two major rivers meet and overflow annually, eventually giving rise to a "street survey" project. The Sacramento Old Town Association recently won an award from the California Preservation Foundation for its underground tour, and you'd be foolish not to check it out. Tours run 5 days a week (check website for tour times) and are very interesting, fun and informative.
